Delft once had eight city gates, only one of which remains: Oostpoort (East gate), built around 1400. The remaining gates were demolished along with city wall in 19th century. Oostpoort consists of a land gate and water gate, connected by remnants of old city wall. The gate had a defence function. If there was imminent danger, it could be closed. Above the entrance to Oostpoort there used to be a statue of St. Catherine, which is why Oostpoort was once also called St. Catherine's Gate.
