Created in 1917, next to the Institute for Technical Botany of the Polytechnic School (later TU Delft), at the initiative of Professor Gerrit van Iterson. At the time, the garden was a 'culture garden for technical crops', where tropical crops were grown for research into their properties and practical applications. Research is still done into new applications of plants. The garden includes a greenhouse complex (1922) with tropical and subtropical plants.
In part, the collection is part of the National Plant Collection, intended to preserve botanical heritage.
